We get questions all the time about how a woman can operate successfully within the fire service. From “when do you get to see your kids when you work 24 hour shifts?” to “don’t you have to sleep in the same room with a bunch of men?” and, critically, “how are you supposed to carry a victim down a two story ladder by yourself?”

So much of the resistance we encounter as women boils down to the public having a lack of understanding about the ins and outs of the fire service. The many misperceptions cause potential fire recruits to have many unanswered questions unless they know someone who has already lived through and figured out the answers.

We have a great community of women that are successful firefighters with decades of wisdom and guidance for new recruits.

With our continued relationships between EMS programs and fire academies, we can also point specific questions to the correct individual. This allows women to move forward with the confidence and reassurance they need to succeed.

In the end, we believe that with hard work, dedication, and the right attitude, any person — regardless of gender — can have a successful career in the fire service.
